Telemedicine Q & A

What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine provides the mental health care you need through online visits. You can skip spending time traveling to the office or finding child care while you’re out. Instead, simply use your smartphone, tablet, or computer to meet your provider face-to-face using video conferencing.

What conditions are treated through telemedicine?

The Black Onyx providers treat nearly every mental health disorder through telemedicine, including:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

You can also schedule a virtual visit if you need help dealing with life transitions or family conflicts or if you have a hard time socializing. Anytime you need guidance, you can get the insight, information, and help you need through telemedicine.

What services are available through telemedicine?

Nearly all the services offered in the office are available through telemedicine, but two services require in-person care: ADHD and blood work. Some medications require occasional blood testing for side effects. You’ll need to do that in person.

The skilled Black Onyx providers have special expertise in diagnosing and treating ADHD. They ask all their ADHD patients to come into the office for their first visit. Then they schedule the rest of your appointments through telemedicine for the next two years.

Other telemedicine services include:

Initial consultation and psychological evaluation

You can meet your Black Onyx provider for the first time using telemedicine. Your initial evaluation takes longer than follow-up appointments because your provider learns about your medical history, reviews your current symptoms, and completes a psychological assessment.

After diagnosing the reason for your symptoms, you schedule online follow-up appointments for psychotherapy and other treatments.

Medication management

If you take psychiatric medications, your provider schedules routine telemedicine appointments. At each visit, they review your symptoms to be sure the medication is helping and learn if you’re having side effects or any problems with taking the medicine. Then they either change your prescription or renew the current one and send it to your pharmacy.

Psychotherapy

You can receive psychotherapy while you relax at home. Telemedicine works well through video conferencing because it feels like you’re sitting there with your therapist. In fact, therapy through telemedicine has the same effectiveness as if you get it in person.

With the convenience of telemedicine, you can easily obtain the mental health care you need. Call the office or use online booking to schedule an appointment today.
